Register a Professional client with a SysMan Authorization server

This article discusses how to register a SysMan Professional client with a SysMan Authorization server.
For any additional information, please consult the SysMan Professional Installation Guide.

A brief introduction: Authorization Server versus Management Console

The SysMan Professional Edition comes with two components:

  • The SysMan Authorization Server, as the central component in where preferences, data and configurations of all SysMan users are kept.
  • The SysMan Management Console, as the client component, which registers with an Authorization Server and thereby accesses and uses the centralized data and configurations.
Because of this approach, a SysMan user is able to access and manage his personal central data (e.g. the same preferences, list of manual connections, favorites, labels and stored credentials) from each connected SysMan client.

Registering a client component with an Authorization Server goes in 2 steps:
  1. Issue an installation key on the Authorization Server.
  2. Apply the installation key on the client to register the client with this Authorization Server

Note:

Please note that installation keys can only be registered once. A new key needs to be issued for every client registration.

Issue an installation key in the SysMan user interface

The easiest way to issue an installation key would be via the SysMan user interface:
  1. Logon to the authorization server as user 'System’.
  2. Right-click anywhere in the SysMan Explorer to open its options menu. From this options menu, click 'SysMan About' (Example).
  3. In the 'SysMan About’ window, open the properties of the current installation (either double-click the 'More Info’ line or right-click anywhere in the 'SysMan About'window and start the option menu 'Properties of this Installation’) (Example).
  4. In the 'Properties of this Installation’ window, open the 'Installation Key’ tab (Example).
(If this tab is not there, then please verify whether you have applied a license for SysMan Professional Edition and that you are logged on to SysMan as user 'System’.)
  5. Click the 'Generate Installation Key’ button to generate a new key (Example).
  6. Copy the key to your clipboard (or alternatively save it in a file using the the 'Save Key File’ button).
  7. If you have generated enough installation keys (as mentioned above, an installation key can only be applied once, so every client needs to register with the authorization server with an unique key), then close the 'Properties of this Installation window' and the 'SysMan About' window.

Issue an installation key in the command prompt

Alternatively, you can issue an installation key from the command prompt:
  1. On the Authorization Server, start CMD with administrative privileges (Example).
(Right click CMD and select 'Run as Administrator'.)
  2. Generate the installation key:
    • On 64 bit machines run:

      Code: Select all

      "C:\Program Files (x86)\Sysgem\SysMan Authorization Server\SEM AuthServer.exe" -SS0 SysMan

    • On 32 bit machines run:

      Code: Select all

      "C:\Program Files\Sysgem\SysMan Authorization Server\SEM AuthServer.exe" -SS0 SysMan
      (Example)
  3. Copy the generated key to your clipboard.

Note:

The above procedure assumes that the standard security-key (i.e. 'SysMan’) is used. If you have overwritten the standard security key with another, then please apply that key instead.

Apply an installation key to a SysMan client at installation time

The most straightforward manner to register a SysMan client (the management console) with an Authorization Server is at client installation time:
  1. On the client machine, start the SysMan Professional Edition installer.
  2. In the installer wizard, when the 'Installation Type’ page opens, click the 'Connect to an existing Authorization Server’ button, which opens the the 'Installation Key’ page (Example).
  3. On the 'Installation Key’ page, apply the Authorization Servers’ host address, the connection port (default is 7240) and the just-generated installation key (Example).
  4. Click 'Next’, continue and finish the installation.
  5. Verify connection with SysMan

Apply an installation key after the SysMan client is installed

It might be necessary to apply an installation key manually, for instance if:
  • You intend to register with another (possibly additional) authorization server.
  • The SysMan client installation is embedded in a workstation distribution image.
  • You’re faced with the 'Console <-> Authorization Server security key mismatch’ error message. I.e. registration with the authorization server is lost.
For such cases, the installation key can also be applied through the command prompt:
  1. On the SysMan client, start CMD with administrative privileges.
(right click CMD and select 'Run as Administrator')
  2. Register the client:
    • On 64 bit machines run:

      Code: Select all

      "C:\Program Files (x86)\Sysgem\SEM User Interface\SEM Client" -u=<authserver>:<port>:<installation key>

For example, if the authorization server would be addressed at 10.95.1.114 and the connection-port would be default (7240) then this command would look like:

      Code: Select all

      "SEM User Interface\SEM Client.exe" -u=10.95.1.114:7240:NXYJ-LHZQ-BWB9-G932-ZP9T-LFR6-F8XY

    • On 32 bit machines use the same command as for 64 bit machines, but start it from "C:\Program Files\" instead:

      Code: Select all

      "C:\Program Files\Sysgem\SEM User Interface\SEM Client" -u=<authserver>:<port>:<installation key>
  3. Close any informational messages and exit the CMD prompt
  4. Verify connection with SysMan.
